Kindergarten - Second Grade Art Elements Lesson Planning

Hi there!

As the old school year draws to a close for our Northern Hemisphere teacher friends, we reflect on things that went well and things we want to improve on in the new year.

Primary Colors / Colours

With all the stress of planning and prepping for your new students, as classroom teachers we often don’t have the time to also plan comprehensive Visual Art lessons. We resort to the same old tried and true - or sadly even to craft activities that lack Visual Art integrity and rigour.

Secondary Colors / Colours

And now, people who don’t know any better, will tell you that AI can write relevant and connected lesson plans for you ?! As a user of AI myself - I strongly disagree with this opinion!

Warm & Cool Colors / Colours

This past year I reflected on ways to comprehensively incorporate more art theory and history into my teaching of Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade. As a result, I developed an incredible series of lessons, based around the elements of art.

Each lesson includes authentic links to the Element, Art Theory, Art History, Famous artists & their artworks ... and ... also guides you and your students through making a quick but relevant art response.

Element of Line Pets

I am currently up to 6 lessons for this age group, all intentionally sequenced to build subject specific knowledge and skills.

But even more importantly, my little learners LOVED these lessons this past year and were so proud of what they had created.

No AI in site, only real students creating real art & developing real intelligence (RI).

I am so excited to share them with you all. They have been flying off the TPT virtual shelf since I added them into my store. Wow! Who knew these were so needed.

Cherry Blossom Textures

Using these lessons will help you make a positive start with planning for your Early Elementary learners, for the new year, too.

If you like the sound of all 6 lessons (and why wouldn't you - they are all great), purchase the bundle and save $$$.

The bundle also includes a bonus - extension activities for these lessons.

So take advantage of this offer and see how my step-by-step tutorials will support your lessons, while also  improving your own Visual Art teaching knowledge and skills.

3D Space Cube Rooms

The Bundle includes all 6 lessons illustrated in this post:

1. Primary Color / Colour

2. Secondary Color / Colour

3. Warm & Cool Color / Colour

4. Line Pets

5. Cherry Blossom Texture

6. 3D Space room cubes

Summer Sparkle in the Northern Hemisphere

As I sit here huddled over the heater and watching the miserable weather being covered on the evening news, I can't help but be envious of our teaching friends in the Northern Hemisphere who are entering their warmer seasons. My sister- in-law in the UK has been posting beautiful spring  photographs of the countryside in the North around Marple, lately.

But then when I look at the great fun we had here over our unless summer of 2014/15, and I'm satisfied. As part of my Seasons unit to help teach Y2 about Colour Theory, one class focused on the colours of  summer and produced some stunning pieces.

We worked on A2 paper for these as I was curious to see how they would cope with a larger canvas. Well what do you think? I think they produced beautiful artworks.

I used the Marzano scale to write up the levelled  success criteria for this unit and have included these for you as well. They cover, drawing skills, painting skills and Colour concepts.

Summer Sparkle is completed and written up in my familiar step-by-step format, for you to enjoy. Click on the RESOURCES button next to the HOME button at the top of this page to link to my stores.

Winter Has Arrived in Earnest

With the wind howling outside and the rain teeming from the grey skies, it only seems fitting that I finally complete my Winter Woolies art unit.

This is a unit I enjoyed with my Y2 classes last year when we explored the element of LINE and then reengineered it this year to include some paint mixing and COLOUR theory as well.

These works have received so many compliments from all who have seen them so I wanted to share both versions with you.
The ideas can easily be upscaled to use with older primary students too.

I included some great snow photographs taken by my sister-in-law in the UK that really motivated the students when looking at the colours of the seasons. This helped students understand why we were working with certain colours.

Winter Woolies fits into my Seasons Series and you can grab yourself a copy of this unit and any others you may fancy by clicking my RESOURCES button at the top of this page, next to the HOME button.
Wishing a happy summer to my Northern Hemisphere friends.

With love, as always

Painting Poppies

In Flander's Field where poppies blow...

As ANZAC day approaches here in New Zealand, thought turns to those who fought for our freedom and those who still continue to do so today, across the world. We also reflect on the huge cost to individuals, families and nations as the lives of loved ones are lost, both servicemen and woman as well as civilian. And the survivors who are forever altered, both physically and mentally.
We will remember...
Please attend an ANZAC day service near you on Saturday 25th April, and pray for peace on earth.

These are my water-colour poppies that I painted during the current term break. Poppies are my favourite flower and I remember as a child playing in fields of them, growing wildly across the road from my grandmother's house in Hungary.
I think there may be a lesson in water-colour painting and colour theory for my senior students with this one :) Watch this space.
In the meantime, I have loaded up the video tutorials on the art videos page of my help-me-learn site for anyone that is interested in having a go:

Frank Stella Paper Sculptures and the Elements of Art

As part of our - How We Express Ourselves - unit, I searched the internet for motivation to do something different in an artist study from your usual VanGogh, Picasso etc.

That's when I came across an image of some unusual looking student artwork based on American artist Frank Stella.

That little image motivated the following unit. It looks absolutely WOW when mounted up on your classroom wall for display, or in a public area in the school, because of its 3D nature. I wouldn't do it with kiddies younger than 8/9 though. That is the age group that is represented in the resource so older kiddies would yield a more graphic result.

This is what it looked like in my room:
The great thing  was that my class learnt about colour theory along the way. I incorporated fractions and  patterns in Geometry too.

It was so much fun that we have repeated the unit again. My class particularly loved the final part of cutting and gluing the sculptural shapes. They were very creative with this part and so good at helping each other as they got to that part. Because of its segmented nature, students could pull it out and work on it for about 30 min each day, or completing one section at a time.

I have put it up the 53 slide unit on TpT so please take a look. I designed it in landscape format so that you can project each step up for your kiddies to see. It's in full colour and jam packed with photographs. I would love for you to try it and send me some feedback.
This is a PDF resource but I now also have a video tutorial option, if that is what you would prefer.

PRAISE FOR Elements of Art project for STELLA PAPER SCULPTURES

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Another great resource. I have purchased several from you recently and I love all of them. This resource is a great way to focus and teach color. I like it for my older students and they had fun with it as it was different than what we have done before. Thanks for the great resource."

Elements of Art

One of our IBO units is called - How We Express Ourselves. At year 4 we developed a unit around around the central idea:
People use many different forms of expression to convey their uniqueness as human beings.
An inquiry into the ways we express ideas, feelings and values.

The unit encompassed an art history timeline, up-skilling on the elements of art, a visit to the city gallery and researching a famous artist of choice. Students produced a brochure about their artist and exhibited art work they created, in the school art exhibition. A pretty full-on unit for 6 weeks.

I spent hours and hours scouring the internet for ideas on teaching the elements of art and accumulated them in a slideshow for my students. I am now slowly tidying up these resources and including samples of original work from my students and own daughters, and then posting them onto TpT.
You can find them in my store by clicking on the links below.
